Visit the silver-mining town of Guanajuato with elaborate churches and subterranean streets. Continue to rose-tinted Morelia with its grand colonial architecture. Stay for 2 nights at Hotel Mision Catedral or similar and enjoy a guided tour of the city. (B)
Add an optional half-day visit to the indigenous town of Pátzcuaro and its lake, before transferring to Mexico City. From November to March, there is the option to visit the Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary en route to Mexico City, to see the amazing migration of millions of butterflies (supplements apply). Alternatively, extend the trip and travel by road to the Pacific coast at Zihuatanejo, one of Mexico's most beautiful bays. (B)
