Fly to Havana for 2 nights. Explore old Havana including the restored Plaza de Armas, the stately Plaza Vieja and the Revolution Museum, housed in the former presidential palace of 1950s dictator General Batista. (B)
Travel west to the Viñales valley, a traditional tobacco-growing area with beautiful limestone formations. Visit a tobacco farmer's house to learn about the growing and drying process, followed by a boat ride on the river running through the Indian cave. Stay for 2 nights. (B, L)
Drive to Santa Clara for an overnight stay, famous for its connection with Che Guevara, whose attack on a Batista troop train marked a turning point in the Cuban revolution. Visit the Che Guevara Memorial, featuring a mausoleam and museum. (B)
Visit historic Cienfuegos, located on a beautiful bay on Cuba's southern coast and a key port for the country's sugar trade. Take a short tour of the centre, then continue to Trinidad, one of the oldest cities in Cuba. (B,L,D)
Enjoy a half-day city tour of Trinidad, including the Plaza Major, a small elegant square that contains the cathedral and the Museo Canteros, a 19th century family home displaying artwork, ornate furniture and memorabilia.
Visit the ruins of former sugar plantations in the Valley of the Sugar Mills and drive on to Camagüey. Take a short tour of its winding streets, built to deter pirate attacks, and stay overnight. (B)
Full-day drive via Bayamo to Santiago de Cuba, the island’s first capital and birthplace of Afro-Cuban culture and music. Stay 2 nights and explore the city and the mountainous surroundings. (B)
