Attractions to enjoy nearby include the hot springs, canopy walkways in the treetops and boat trips on Lake Arenal, as well as along the Rio Frio and the Caño Negro wetlands. The wetlands offer superb opportunities for birding.
Further north-west and off the beaten track is the Tenorio National Park, where hikes in the rainforest lead to natural hot springs, waterfalls and the turquoise blue Rio Celeste, whose blue waters are created by mineral deposits. The less explored Rincon de la Vieja National Park is home to another active volcano, tropical dry forest, varied wildlife, more geothermal springs and mud pools.

Rincon de la Vieja, located in the country's northwest, is an eco-adventure hotspot offering various thermal springs and a multitude of activities. The major attractions are the Rincon de la Vieja volcano, whose active crater is at 1,800 m altitude and the surrounding national park with varied flora, mud pools, waterfalls and freshwater lakes.
