Located on the north-eastern side of the Golfo Dulce, just 30 minutes by boat from either Golfito or Puerto Jimenez, Playa Cativo Lodge is nestled in a 400-hectare (1,000-acre) private rainforest reserve, surrounded by the rainforests, mangroves and wetlands of the Piedras Blancas National Park. Set amid swaying palms and lush tropical gardens, and overlooking a sandy beach and the tranquil blue waters of the Golfo Dulce, this small boutique eco lodge is built in a plantation-style using local hardwoods. The lodge features an open-air lounge and dining area, while comfortable rooms are decorated in an elegant yet rustic style and feature beach and ocean views and screen windows which can be opened to enjoy the sea breezes. Delicious meals are prepared by the well-regarded chef using fresh produce from the property's own organic farm.
There are a number of excursions available to book locally, including snorkelling trips, kayaking through mangroves, birdwatching and whale watching (Jun-Sep). Alternatively, take a self-guided walk or book a guided hike along the well-marked network of trails through the primary forest that has a biodiversity equal to that of the nearby Osa Peninsula and Corcovado National Park. Complimentary snorkelling equipment, kayaks and paddleboards are provided, subject to availability.
