Here, the rainforest is home to howler monkeys and armadillos, while superb birdlife includes toucans, trogons, falcons and parrots. Within this area, the Mountain Pine Ridge forests are spread over an area dotted with waterfalls and caves. Stay in a lodge and explore the region by hiking, horse riding, cycling or canoeing. Excursions can also be arrange to visit Mayan ruins. Visit the ruins at Xunantunich, not far from the town of San Ignacio, or the spectacular and remote ruined Mayan city of Caracol. Or venture further afield across the border in to Guatemala to visit the magnificent Mayan site of Tikal.
