Belize is the only English-speaking country in Central America, making it more of an accessible country to travel to, especially on a tailor-made itinerary.
Inland is mainly covered by overgrown, dense jungle that stretches across mountains and hosts a variety of species of birds and other wildlife including howler monkeys and the elusive jaguar. Visit the Cayo District and stay in jungle lodges where the crescendo of crickets, toucans and howler monkeys drown out any outside noise, creating a sense of being in the heart of the jungle. If you want to go in search of jaguars, we recommend visiting the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary as it is home to the world’s highest population of jaguars. Even if you do not see a jaguar, chances are one will see you or maybe you will come across some fresh tracks of a big cat.
The coastline of Belize runs along the world’s second largest barrier reef, offering spectacular snorkelling sites, especially in Placencia, Caye Caulker and Belize’s largest island, Ambergris Caye. Hopkins makes for a fascinating visit as you can soak up the colourful and rhythmic Garifuna culture here. Join the whole village on a Tuesday evening as they come to the beach to practise drumming, something the Garifuna people are famous for.
