Northern Belize is home to the Orange Walk District, known for its areas of dense jungle, farming communities and plantations, and is one of the country’s greatest birdwatching destinations. Highlights include the Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary, home to howler monkeys, iguanas and crocodiles and an abundance of native and migratory birds, which congregate in their thousands in the dry season (Nov-May). There are several Mayan sites to explore: Altun Ha, a seventh-century ceremonial centre where Belize’s famous jade head was discovered; and Lamanai, surrounded by rainforest and overlooking the New River Lagoon. The best way to experience this region is to stay in an authentic jungle lodge.
