Belgium might be a small country, but it has played an important part in the history of Europe. For many centuries it has been the battleground for major European powers, and is today home to the headquarters of the EU and Nato.
In Brussels, the capital city, both French and Dutch are the official languages, but generally the country is split between the Dutch-speaking region of Flanders in the north and the largely French-speaking Wallonia region in the south. The north is flat but studded with historical cities which are well connected by train and close together. Attractions in the south are more rural with bucolic villages, caves and castles.
