Accommodation rating: Superior

The remote Karawai Lodge is only accessible via its private airstrip or the Karawari river. With no roads, shops or phones, the local communities live completely off the land, weaving baskets for catching fish and gathering, preparing and cooking their staple food from the sago palm. Accommodation is in 10 separate cottages, each built out of local bush materials and inspired by traditional architecture. Each cottage has two private twin rooms, each with modern en-suite bathrooms, and a communal veranda. Despite its remoteness, the lodge has electricity, hot & cold water, mosquito-netted beds, ceiling fans, a restaurant and a bar.
