The village is the gateway to the Franz Josef Glacier. This glacier was first documented by Abel Tasman in 1642, later by Captain Cook in 1770, and explored by Julius von Haast in 1865, who named the glacier after the Austrian emperor. From 1865 to 1965, the glacier was slowly receding but since then has been advancing.
