The state capital of Victoria, Melbourne is often regarded as the most European of Australian cities thanks partly to the number of galleries, museums and theatres. Melbourne is the most ethnically diverse city in Australia with a large southern European and Asian influence. The city is located on Port Phillip Bay at the mouth of the Yarra River. It was founded in 1835 and remained a small town until the 1850s when gold was discovered in Victoria. This fuelled rapid development of the city, which became Australia’s major financial centre of the time. Today Melbourne is home to 3.2 million people and the site of many of the biggest sporting events in the country.
