The best time to visit Zambia depends on the type of experience you’re after. The most popular time is during the short dry period, between April and September when the game congregates near the waterholes. July is an ideal time weather-wise, as temperatures are warm but not overly so; it’s also when Livingstone Island opens to visitors each year.
Meanwhile, one of the most underrated times of year – the Emerald Season – runs from November to March (when it rains) and April to May (when the bush dries out). During this time, there is wonderful birding, excellent photography opportunities due to less dust, an abundance of young nursery herds, superb boating on the high Luangwa river and a lush green bush bathed in spectacular light. It is also excellent value with lower rates.
