Accommodation rating: Superior
Situated on a scenic bend of the Mwaleshi River within the remote North Luangwa National Park, Mwaleshi Camp is a seasonal walking camp open from 15 June to 31 October. It is simple, rustic and unpretentious yet extremely comfortable, which is how a true bush camp should be. Accommodating up to 8 guests, each chalet is reconstructed each year from fresh reed and thatch. They have solar-powered electric lanterns, washbasins, en suite flushing toilets and bucket showers (with hot water available).
Mwaleshi is one of the most remote camps in Zambia and wildlife around the camp is abundant. There is a particularly good population of lion and buffalo as well as large herds of the endemic Cookson's wildebeest, and elephant. Mwaleshi doesn't offer game drives; it purely focuses on walking safaris. Walks from the camp are approximately 3 - 4 hours and there is usually a stop for refreshments along the way. The terrain in North Luangwa National Park is fairly flat so only a very modest level of fitness is required, but a sturdy pair of walking shoes is highly recommended.
