Day 1: Fly to Entebbe via Addis Ababa

Fly from London (regional connections available) to Entebbe via Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Day 2: Entebbe

Transfer to Best Western Hotel (or similar) for the night. (N)

Day 3: Murchison Falls National Park

Drive south to Murchison Falls, Uganda’s largest national park. This haven for wildlife is home to the waterfall of its namesake, where the Nile crashes spectacularly through a narrow gorge. Spend 2 nights in the National Park. (B, L, D)

Day 4: Murchison Falls National Park

Your second day features morning and evening safari drives, as well as a Nile river cruise to the falls and past wildlife such as crocodile, hippo and elephant. (B, L, D)

Day 5: Kibale

Take a short flight to Kasese airstrip and transfer to Kibale National Park. This enchanting place has one of the most varied tracts of tropical forest in Uganda, home to prolific birdlife and butterflies, forest elephants, bushbuck, Harvey’s red duiker, giant forest hog, African civet and a sizeable population of chimpanzee – the star attraction. Stay for 2 nights at Ndali Lodge (or similar). (B, L, D)

Day 6: Kibale

On your second day, a guided trek will lead you to some of the 5,000 or so chimpanzees living in Kibale. Spend an unforgettable hour watching them play, groom, eat and climb. Overnight stay at Ndali Lodge (or similar). (B, L, D)

Day 7: Queen Elizabeth National Park

Drive to Queen Elizabeth National Park for 2 days of adventure in one of Uganda’s most popular conservancies. Within its 1,978 sq km, savanna, fertile forest and wetland offer refuge to a variety of species including tree-climbing lion, Ugandan kob, gazelles, elephants, monkeys, hippos, chimpanzees and buffaloes. Stay for 2 nights at Mweya Safari Lodge (or similar). (B, L, D)

Day 8: Queen Elizabeth National Park

Your second day here features morning and evening safari drives, and an afternoon cruise on the Kazinga Channel. Overnight stay at Mweya Safari Lodge (or similar). (B, L, D)

Day 9: Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

After a morning safari, drive to UNESCO-listed Bwindi National Park, with stops en route at local towns. Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is aptly named: ‘bwindi’ means darkness, and this densely tangled, green wilderness is deeply shaded and rises steeply – from over 1,000 metres to almost 3,000. Overnight at Mahogany Springs (or similar). (B, L, D)

Day 10: Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

Today is the day. After an early breakfast, head to the Uganda Wildlife Authority Park headquarters where you will meet fellow trackers and your guide, who will lead you into the forest in search of the mountain gorilla. These large primates are extremely rare, with only approximately 1,000 remaining. It can take 6 hours or longer to find a gorilla group – all at relatively high altitude. Although sightings cannot be guaranteed, the success rate is over 95 per cent. You have the chance to get within metres of a habituated gorilla family, enjoying their company for an hour. Overnight at Mahogany Springs (or similar). (B, L, D)

Day 11: Fly to the UK via Entebbe

This morning, return to Entebbe via a flight from Kihihi airstrip. You will be met and transferred to Best Western Hotel, yours for day use, ahead of your departure flight. (B)

Day 12: Arrive in London

    Ndali Lodge is set in spectacular surroundings in the Bunyaruguru Crater Field. These volcanic craters were formed 11,000 years ago and have filled with water over the ages to form serene lakes. The lodge sits on a narrow ridge with superb views of the ancient volcanic landscape. Eight thatched bandas provide en suite bathrooms, private verandas and plenty of privacy, with views across to the Rwenzori Mountains and Queen Elizabeth National Park. The lodge does have hot and cold running water; however, all lighting is by candle or storm lantern. In the evenings, the dining room is festooned with candles.
