Day 5: Kibale

Take a short flight to Kasese airstrip and transfer to Kibale National Park. This enchanting place has one of the most varied tracts of tropical forest in Uganda, home to prolific birdlife and butterflies, forest elephants, bushbuck, Harvey’s red duiker, giant forest hog, African civet and a sizeable population of chimpanzee – the star attraction. Stay for 2 nights at Ndali Lodge (or similar). (B, L, D)

Day 9: Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

After a morning safari, drive to UNESCO-listed Bwindi National Park, with stops en route at local towns. Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is aptly named: ‘bwindi’ means darkness, and this densely tangled, green wilderness is deeply shaded and rises steeply – from over 1,000 metres to almost 3,000. Overnight at Mahogany Springs (or similar). (B, L, D)

Day 10: Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

Today is the day. After an early breakfast, head to the Uganda Wildlife Authority Park headquarters where you will meet fellow trackers and your guide, who will lead you into the forest in search of the mountain gorilla. These large primates are extremely rare, with only approximately 1,000 remaining. It can take 6 hours or longer to find a gorilla group – all at relatively high altitude. Although sightings cannot be guaranteed, the success rate is over 95 per cent. You have the chance to get within metres of a habituated gorilla family, enjoying their company for an hour. Overnight at Mahogany Springs (or similar). (B, L, D)

Day 11: Fly to the UK via Entebbe

This morning, return to Entebbe via a flight from Kihihi airstrip. You will be met and transferred to Best Western Hotel, yours for day use, ahead of your departure flight. (B)
