Located in the town of Kisoro in the extreme south-west of Uganda, the Travellers Rest Hotel was built in the 1950s by the gorilla conservationist Walter Baumgartel and was used as a base for gorilla tracking expeditions into the Virungas - frequented by Dian Fossey during the 1960s. Appropriated by the state during the Idi Amin era, the property today is again privately owned and been restored offering 11 en suite rooms tastefully decorated with a unique selection of African art. The spacious rooms overlook a well-groomed courtyard that has the Virunga volcanoes as a backdrop. Other facilities include a communal lounge with a fireplace and a restaurant.
