Accommodation rating: Good Standard
Ngorongoro Wildlife Lodge was the first lodge built on the crater rim and has the privilege of affording excellent panoramic views descending down to the crater floor, 600 metres below. The lodge has 80 rooms, all which look out to the crater and come complete with en suite bathrooms, safes, minibars, telephones, tea / coffee-making facilities and hair dryers. It is, however, rather dated and we rate it at a basic 3-star level only, making it one of the more affordable options in the area.
The lodge is built mainly from natural stone and local dark wood, with large floor-to-ceiling windows that make full use of the outside views. Coin-operated binoculars are available for use on the outer viewing deck in order to spot many of the wildlife species that inhabit the crater floor. There is also a large lounge and bar area complete with comfortable sofas and a fireplace. The lodge also has a curio shop and a library with books detailing the history of the area.
