The word 'Chaka' comes from the word 'kichaka,' which means 'bush' in Swahili. Chaka Camp is an intimate mobile-tented camp of nine tents located in the Serengeti ecosystem. Each tent has a private, shaded veranda overlooking the Serengeti ecosystem, a writing desk, wardrobe, electric lighting and an en suite bathroom with flush lavatory. Room fabrics are handwoven African designs, and the camp's furniture was commissioned and crafted by artists in Arusha, Tanzania. One large tent contains the living and dining areas, with a bar, small library, front veranda and a nearby fire pit for evening campfires. Chaka Camp operates off the grid and relies on a custom-built solar-powered system for its power.
Chaka Camp, designed to be lightweight enough to move seasonally, is located in the Ndutu area from December through to March. The camp relocates to Central Serengeti from May through to November.
From December through to March, the wildebeest migration moves in and out of the Ndutu area. Ndutu is located in Ngorongoro Conservation Area, just south of Serengeti National Park. Chaka Camp's location provides easy access to prime wildlife viewing areas around Lakes Ndutu and Masek. In addition to the almost two million wildebeest and zebra that move through the area each year, Ndutu is home to cheetahs, lions, giraffes and hundreds of bird species. During February's calving season, the wildebeest give birth to 8,000 babies a day.
From May through to November, Chaka Camp relocates to Seronera in the Central Serengeti. Seronera, located in the heart of Serengeti National Park, offers year-round wildlife viewing and is thought to be one of the best places in Africa to spot large cats. From Seronera it is easy to access others areas of the Serengeti such as the Grumeti river ecosystem, Retina Hippo Pool, Moru Kopjes and Lobo.
Wildlife drives in 4x4 vehicles can be taken from Chaka Camp. Private dining under the stars and private drinks at sunset in the bush are also available (subject to availability and weather conditions).
