Grahamstown was founded in 1812 as a military outpost by Lieutant-Colonel John Graham. This was part of the effort to secure the eastern frontier of British influence in the then Cape Colony, against the Xhosa. It is located 130 km from Port Elizabeth. Grahamstown is home to the national Arts Festival which is the largest of its kind in Africa and sees both local and international talent gather for a celebration of culture and artistic expression.
