Oudtshoorn is situated in the Klein Karoo, 55 km from the coastal town of George. The most famous features of the Oudtshoorn area are the Cango Caves and the ostrich farms. Close to the town, the Cango Caves were sculpted by nature through the ages. Mysterious and breathtaking limestone formations in a wide variety of natural colours create a subterranean wonderland and guided tours are regularly available. Amongst the 400 ostrich farms surrounding the town, three have distinguished themselves sufficiently to become “show farms” which are open to the public. With year round sunshine, Oudtshoorn is a great place for outdoor activities. Surrounded by mountain ranges and blessed with a rich variety of bird and plant life the Klein Karoo is a great area to explore. Visit Meerkat Magic, the only wild meerkat conservation project in the world where a leading wildlife research biologist is your tour guide. Observe these shy, secretive creatures without impacting on their environment. Take a cultural tour through the Bongolethu Township where you will get an insight in the consequences of forced removal by the apartheid government and see how these people live today. The rich culture of Oudtshoorn is reflected in its museums and national monuments. The CP Nel museum with its collection of musical instruments, antique shopping mall, feather fashions and vintage vehicles traces the story of the “ostrich feather boom” that made many ostrich farmers rich in the early 1900’s. The Le Roux Townhouse Museum provides a glimpse into life as it was once in the Klein Karoo and many buildings showcase fine examples of traditional “Karoo” and Victorian architecture.
