It has a rich history, having been settled over 300 years ago by the Huguenots, whose French influence still pervades the area. Food is taken very seriously in Franschhoek, which is known as the gourmet capital of South Africa. There are over 35 restaurants in the town and several South African 5-star chefs, whose dishes range from French-influenced gourmet cuisine to the traditional and rustic.
