Accommodation rating: Good Standard
The historic buildings of Reed Valley Inn in the Amakhala Game Reserve once provided rest and safe haven for the mail-wagon passengers. Now stylishly redecorated, the four comfortable en suite bedrooms are set in the tranquil farmyard and completely separate from the main homesteads to ensure guests' peace and privacy. Farm style breakfasts and three course dinners are served in the main dining room.
Amakhala Game Reserve offers a range of morning and evening safaris. You can take game drives in an open Land Rover in search of rhino, elephant, cheetah, buffalo, giraffe, black wildebeest, zebra, tortoise and over 16 antelope species. Alternatively, try a night drive to seek out elusive nocturnal animals such as lynx, porcupine and spring hare. A guided walk with one of the qualified rangers is also a fascinating experience, providing the chance to move slowly through the bush and discover some of nature's minutiae. On Bushman's River, a slow cruise offers excellent bird watching with a good chance of seeing the majestic African fish eagle and three species of kingfisher, whilst a canoe trip on the river provides you with an up-close view of the tranquil riverine ecosystem.
