Accommodation rating: Good Standard

Papkuilsfontein Guest Farm is located deep in the South African farming heartland of the northern Western Cape. Accommodation is offered in various farm cottages that have been sympathetically restored and individually decorated. This is the ideal base from which to view the spectacle of indigenous flowers that bloom towards the end of August and during September. Every year, the blossoming bulbs create an orange, yellow and purple carpet of flowers in an area that is predominantly barren. Hiking is also popular from here, where you can trek to the 180-metre-deep canyon, with waterfalls cascading down 100m. There is also exceptional birdlife and San rock art sites. Breakfast, light lunches, coffee and cakes are served at Die Waenhuis ('wagon house' in Afrikaans), a small restaurant on the farm open seven days a week from 10am to 4pm during the springtime flower season (beginning of August until the end of September). The farm is made up of a number of cottages that are set up as self-catering, however guests are welcome to enjoy breakfast and pre-booked freshly prepared dinners, which can be delivered to your cottage.
