Accommodation rating: Luxury
Grande Roche is situated in the Drakenstein valley of Paarl. Its heritage dates back to the 18th century and was restored to its original Cape Dutch splendour and transformed into a luxury hotel in 1991. In 1993 it was declared a national monument and is now one of the only existing wine farms in a residential area. Each of the 34 rooms and suites have been luxuriously designed for the comfort and pampering of guests. All rooms are housed in buildings that are over 300 years old. As an example of this two of the buildings used to be the old cellar and the slave quarters. To complement the rich history of the property the rooms are classic and elegant but contemporary enough to suit all tastes. The duplex suites consist of a lounge area downstairs and bedroom upstairs.
Bosman's Restaurant has been awarded 'Best restaurant in Africa' and is the only Relais Gourmand restaurant in Africa. Located in the main manor house, at the heart of the hotel, it has a terrace and patio area for fine weather dining. It is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and the dress code is smart. The restaurant's cellar has 25,000 bottles of wine of 450 different varieties. Bistro Allegro is the alternative dining option. It is set around a pool area and offers light snacks.
The vineyard at Grande Roche produces 800 bottles of wine per year, which are exclusively available in Bosman's restaurant. If you stay at the hotel during the harvest you can participate in picking the grapes or at any time of the year you can take a stroll through the vineyard. The hotel offers complimentary wine tasting daily. A nice excursion that can be arranged is a picnic breakfast with champagne on Paarl rock. Walk up to the top and then choose to walk back down or get chauffer driven back. The property also offers add-on packages such as golf or culinary delights to enhance you winelands experience. With a heli pad on site, Grande Roche can also arrange various heli-tour options of Cape Town and the Winelands.
