African tribal designs have inspired the creation of Amakhala Safari Lodge, one of seven lodges situated in the Amakhala Game Reserve, adjacent to Shamwari. The lodge is owned and managed by the same families who farmed the area with sheep and cattle five generations ago. Here you can relax in your intimate thatched safari hut, soak in a luxurious double bath, or cool off in an outdoor shower before gathering around the fireside under the stars.
You can take game drives in an open Land Rover in search of rhino, elephant, cheetah, buffalo, giraffe, black wildebeest, zebra, tortoise and over 16 antelope species. Alternatively, take a night drive to seek out elusive nocturnal animals such as lynx, porcupine and spring hare. A guided walk with one of the lodge's qualified rangers is also a fascinating experience, offering a chance to move slowly through the bush and to notice smaller species of flora and fauna. A slow cruise down the Bushman's River provides excellent bird watching with a good chance of seeing the majestic African fish eagle and three species of kingfisher. Amongst the wildlife drinking at the river's edge, the rare Cape clawless otter may be sighted. Canoeing on the river also provides a wonderful close-up view of the tranquil riverine ecosystem
