Be driven through tea and banana plantations, passing waving villagers on the way to Lake Kivu. Stop at Kibuye and take a boat trip across the lake to Napolean Island with its colony of fruit bats. Spend a night in Gisenyi, watching the sunset on its lovely sandy beach.
The major attraction in the tropical Nyungwe Forest National Park are chimpanzees. The guided forest walks offer the opportunity to see as many as 275 bird and 75 mammal (including 13 primate) species living there.
A small, modern and friendly capital, Kigali does not have the organised tourist activities of some of its regional counterparts. However, expect authentic and lively local markets, as well as a moving, well-narrated account of the Rwandan Genocide at the Kigali Genocide Memorial Centre.
