Accommodation rating: Good Standard
Nestled on the forested shores of Lake Ihema, Rwanda's second-largest lake, Ruzizi Tented Lodge is one of only three available lodges in Akagera National Park. Designed to blend into its gorgeous setting, the camp is surrounded with abundant vegetation, with trees growing through roofs and greenery spilling onto and over wooden boardwalks. With only nine tents, the lodge's cosy atmosphere is enriched by locally crafted decorations and furniture. Aside from the main lounge and dining area, a large deck with a fireplace overlooks the lake, where the camp's excellent reputation for food is enjoyed. The camp's sustainability efforts are beyond admirable; it is powered entirely by solar and 100% of its profits are donated to support the long-term conservation of the park. Game drives, boat trips and fishing excursions are some of the activities on offer. Guests can also experience Rwandan village life, take advantage of the extraordinary birdwatching opportunities and, uniquely, enjoy a behind-the-scenes tour of the park's headquarters.
Features: 9 tents, dining area, guided walking safaris, night drives, boat trips, birdwatching, fishing.
Room amenities: Private bathroom, hot running water, private patio.
