Namibia Classic Self-Drive

This popular self-drive itinerary is a flexible, cost-effective way to discover the best that Namibia has to offer. Visit the giant red dunes of Sossusvlei, the adventure town of Swakopmund, impressive granite landscapes in Damaraland, and Etosha National Park, which promises extraordinary self-drive safaris to see its many residing big cats.

DAY 2: Fly to Windhoek

On arrival in Windhoek, you will be met and assisted with collection of your hire car. Overnight at The Elegant Guesthouse. (N)

DAY 3: Gamsberg

Gamsberg

This morning, drive for approximately two hours to Corona Guest Farm, set at the foot of the majestic Gamsberg Mountain.  Explore Gamsberg Nature Reserve, home to a variety of wildlife and indigenous plant life.  (B, D) 

DAY 4: Sossusvlei

Sossusvlei

Transfer to Sossusvlei, set within Namib-Naukluft National Park. Explore Sossusvlei, home to some of the world’s largest sand dunes.  The distinctive red dunes rise to almost 400 metres. Stay 2 nights at Desert Homestead Lodge. (B,D)

Spend the day exploring. Sites of interest include the eerily beautiful scorched trees of Deadvlei; the scalable Dune 45 and Big Daddy; and the stunning Sesriem Canyon. (B, D)

DAY 6: Swakopmund

Head east to the Germanic town of Swakopmund, gateway to the Skelton Coast. Stay 2 nights at Cornerstone Guesthouse. (B) 

DAY 7: Swakopmund

Catamaran cruise from Swakopmund to Pelican Point and Walvis Bay. Search for the marine big 5 – dolphins, whales, turtles, seals and Mola Mola (sunfish) while onboard. (B)

DAY 8: Twyfelfontein

Travel to the wildlife-rich region of Damaraland, also home to Africa’s largest concentration of ancient rock art. Stay 2 nights at Camp Kipwe (B, L, D) 

DAY 9: Twyfelfontein

Twyfelfontein

Spend a second day exploring this wild, arid region. Activities on offer include elephant nature drives lasting 3-6 hours. Starting in the morning, these guided 4×4 excursions take you in search of Namibia’s desert-dwelling elephants. You may also wish to join an afternoon excursion to Burnt Mountain, the Organ Pipes, and the fascinating Bushman Engravings. (B, L, D) 

DAY 10: Etosha National Park

Rise early for a six-hour journey to the southern edge of Etosha National Park. During self-drive safaris, you may spot elephants, giraffes, lions, leopards, jackals, hyenas, meerkats, mongooses, honey badgers, zebras, and wildebeest. Cheetahs, rhinos, and many other species can also be found here. Stay 2 nights at Okaukuejo Rest Camp. (B)

DAY 14: Okonjima Nature Reserve

Travel to Okonjima Nature Reserve, home to the AfriCAT carnivore sanctuary. Stay 2 nights at Okonjima Plains Camp. (B, D)

DAY 15: Okonjima Nature Reserve

Spend the day at Okonjima Nature Reserve for the Okonjima Leopard Activity. Participate in research data collection for the long standing leopard project and recently introduced brown hyena programme. (B, D)
