Accommodation rating: Superior
From its beautiful vantage point overlooking a well-frequented watering point and the plains beyond, the well established Ongava Game Lodge is situated along the southern boundary of Etosha National Park in the privately owned Ongava Game Reserve. Ongava is the ideal place from which to base your activities when visiting Etosha. The 14 air-conditioned rock and thatch units each have en suite bathroom facilities. Meals are served in the main dining area under thatch with a view over the camp's waterhole and the lodge also has a shady swimming pool.
Activities include safari drives in open 4x4 vehicles into the Okaukuejo area of Etosha, where animals such as lions, elephants, cheetahs, gemsboks, springboks, and hartebeest can be seen at many of the waterholes in the park. In addition, hides and walks with guides are enjoyed on the private reserve. Ongava has resident white and black rhinos - one of the few private reserves in southern Africa to do so - allowing guests the special opportunity to see both of these charismatic species.
Ongava Lodge has 10 chalets which are attractively built out of brick and thatch close to the top of a hill. Each chalet is beautifully appointed in traditional ‘safari’ style and has en suite bathroom with flush toilet, bath, shower and double hand basins. There is air conditioning in the rooms and overhead fans. The rooms have glass fronted doors which lead out onto a private covered veranda overlooking the bush. The main lounge, bar and dining area is also under thatch with wonderful views across the plains and floodlit waterhole below. Outdoor dining under the stars, with the ever present possibility of viewing game drinking at the waterhole is something never to be forgotten. There is also a swimming pool and a large curio shop stocking a good selection of "African Gifts and branded safari clothing" As the lodge is built close to the top of a hill, there are several steps.
