Overnight flight from London (regional
connections available) to Antananarivo, via
Addis Ababa. On arrival, transfer to Andasibe.
In the evening enjoy a welcome meeting and
dinner with the group and guide. Stay 3 nights
at Andasibe Hotel (or similar). (N) (D)
Morning walk in Analamazaotra Special
Reserve searching for indri, the largest of all
the lemur species. Afternoon visit to Mitsinjo,
where you can plant a tree and contribute
to the crucial reforestation project. After
dinner, take an early evening stroll in search
of nocturnal species like mouse, greater dwarf
and eastern woolly lemurs. (B, L, D)
Explore Mantadia National Park, home to several
lemur species (including the elusive aye-aye),
along with chameleons and a host of rare birds.
Afternoon visit to Lemur Island, a sanctuary for
a range of lemur species that have been rescued
from the captive wildlife trade. (B, L, D)
Drive back to Antananarivo for a flight south
to Toliara. This region possesses drastically
different terrain, with dry savannah and rocky
canyons replacing the rainforests of Andasibe.
Drive east through this striking landscape to
Isalo National Park. Stay 3 nights at Relais de la
Reine (or similar). (B, L, D)
Walk the winding paths of Isalo National
Park, dotted with deep ravines, turquoise
pools, refreshing waterfalls and rare plants.
It is also home to the iconic ‘dancing lemur’
known as the Verreaux’s sifaka, and perhaps
the best-known lemur breed, the ring-tails.
In the afternoon visit a local village and meet the Bara people, descendants of the Masai in
East Africa. Learn about their architecture and
way of life before continuing to the Namaza
Canyon. (B, L, D)
Another morning to explore the national park,
before an afternoon at leisure at the hotel. In
the evening your guide will lead you to a lovely
spot to watch the sun set and the darkness fall.
(B, L, D)
Journey south to Zombitse National Park where
you will spend around two hours looking for
some of the 38 endemic species of bird and
eight species of lemur. Then continue to the
coastal region of Ifaty. Overnight at the Dunes
D’Ifaty. (B, L, D)
Visit the spiny forests of Ifaty, before following
the coast northwards on a dirt road to Salary.
Stay 3 nights at Mikea Lodge. (B, L, D)
Full-day excursion to the Mikea Forest. This
very dry region is a strange world with odd
vegetation and a selection of animals, including
lemurs, that have evolved to thrive in the sandbased
environment. It is a great location for
photographing the famed Madagascan baobab
trees and spiny forests. You will also learn
about, and possibly see, members of the Mikea
people, who inhabit the forest and live a largely
‘hunter gatherer’ existence. (B, L, D)
Enjoy a day at leisure to relax on the beach or
join an optional excursion such as kayaking, or snorkelling (payable locally). (B, L, D)
Travel back down the scenic coast to Toliara.
Overnight at the Moringa Hotel. (B, L, D)
Fly back to the capital and join an optional
cooking class at the Café du Musee. Here you
will have the chance to learn how to make
authentic Malagasy cuisine from a reputable
local chef. Overnight at the Tamboho Suites.
Morning at leisure, then transfer to the airport
for the overnight flight to London via Addis
Ababa, arriving the following day. (B) (N)
