Lake Naivasha, meaning ‘rippling waters’ is 170 square kilometres in size and lies about 1,890 m above sea level. It is a freshwater lake on the Rift Valley floor with no apparent outlet, but it is believed to be drained by underwater seepage. The lake is dominated by the overshadowing Mount Longonot (2,880 m), a partially extinct volcano in the adjacent national park. There are hippos on the lake that sometimes come out onto the shore at night to graze and there are a number of different types of waterbirds. The lake is best explored by boat or alternatively you could work your way around the shore by bicycle.
