Accommodation rating: Good Standard

This boutique hotel sits on the shores of Lamu Island, a short distance from the Kenyan mainland. Still family-run, the Peponi was established in the 1960s by the Korschens, who were won over by the handsome house and its idyllic setting. Today, it features 28 en-suite, individually designed rooms, all with ocean views, overhead fans, mosquito nets and in-room safes. There is a small and curvaceous outdoor pool, framed by palms and overlooking the sea. The restaurant serves up an international menu made using locally sourced produce, including home-grown vegetables. Guests are afforded easy access to a long, quiet stretch of golden beach.
