Discovery Private Tour in brief

Days 1-2: Fly to Addis Ababa

Fly overnight from London (regional connections available) to Addis Ababa. Afternoon guided city tour including a visit to the National Museum and one of the former palaces of Emperor Haile Selassie. Overnight at the Golden Tulip Hotel. (N) (L, D)

Day 3: Lake Ziway

Drive through part of the Great Rift Valley to Lake Ziway, known for excellent birdlife that includes pelicans and flamingos. Afternoon boat trip to Tullo Guddo Island, said to have once briefly safeguarded the Ark of the Covenant. Overnight at Haile Resort Ziway. (B, L, D)

Day 4: Langano • Abijata Shalla

Continue south and enjoy time in lake-filled national parkland, passing Shashamene, the ancestral home of the Rastafarians who now inhabit Jamaica. Overnight at the Sabana Beach Resort. (B, L, D)

Day 5: Awasa

Following the end of Ethiopia’s short spell as a communist nation, Awasa became a regional capital and is now home to a melting pot of different peoples. Soak up the culture here with a visit to the fish market. Overnight at Haile Hotel. (B, L, D)

Days 6-7: Arba Minch

Coffee was first discovered in Ethiopia and a nearby plantation is the perfect place to see how the beans are picked, dried and sorted. Then head to Maze National Park and search for wildlife such as lions and Swayne’s hartebeests. The following day head to Chenecha to meet the Dorze people, known for their cotton weaving and tall beehive-style huts. Stay 2 nights at Paradise Lodge, Arba Minch. (B, L, D)

Days 8-10: Turmi

West of the Humu mountains, the small town of Turmi is home to the unique Hamer tribe. Over the next few days you will gain a fascinating insight into their way of life with a range of cultural experiences. You will also head north to visit other remote tribes who rarely meet foreign travellers. Stay 3 nights at Buska Lodge. (B, L, D)

Day 11: Konso

Returning east to the Rift Valley, stay amongst the hilltop villages of the Konso tribe, an area rich in birdlife and distinct tribal architecture. Overnight at Kanta Lodge. (B, L, D)

Day 12: Arba Minch

Return to Arba Minch via Nachisar National Park, which is home to zebras, baboons, monkeys and other wildlife. Overnight at Haile Resort. (B, L, D)

Days 13-14: Fly to London via Addis Ababa

Fly to Addis Ababa, where you will have access to a day room and have dinner before transferring to the airport for your early morning flight home. (B, L, D) (N)

This itinerary takes you deep into areas not often visited by tourists. Therefore, the infrastructure will not always meet with the standards found elsewhere and local customs may differ hugely from those considered conventional in the UK.

    Sabana Beach Resort is 200km south of Addis Ababa on the shores of Lake Langano. The bungalows are situated on a cliff top each with an expansive view of Lake Langano and the Arsi mountains from a private balcony. The bungalows are built with local materials and their ventilated thatched roof design ensures an ideal room temperature at all times. There is a restaurant which serves both national and international cuisine, as well as a lounge bar. The resort has a beach and day trips can be taken to Lake Shalla and Abjiata National Park.
