Addis Ababa, the capital of modern Ethiopia and gateway for most tourists, is the political and commercial heart of the country. The third highest capital in the world, at a height of 2,400 metres above sea level, it is now a city of four million people and was founded by Emperor Menelik in 1887. Addis Ababa, at just over 100 years old, is the country’s commercial, manufacturing and cultural centre, and home to the Mercato, the largest open markets in Africa.
