Macatoo Camp is situated on the western side of Botswana's Okavango Delta within the private Abu concession. This intimate camp is located on a on a palm fringed island, surrounded by grassy plains, water meadows and seasonal lagoons. There are six large, walk-in canvas tents, each with its own en-suite shower and toilet. Communal areas feature a large furnished mess tent and a private pool.
Macatoo is a specialist horseback safari camp and an excellent area in which to ride with wildlife both diverse and abundant. The riding can be varied, from walking quietly while stalking big game and admiring the bird life, to cantering through the water meadows alongside giraffe and lechwe antelope.
Riding ability is important. Four to six hours a day are spent in the saddle. Riders do need to feel competent about keeping up with the group, capable of riding at all paces, rising to the trot and controlling the horse at a canter. You may be required to gallop out of trouble, which means that beginners, regrettably, are not catered for. It will be at the discretion of the camp staff whether you will be permitted to ride, as safety and enjoyment of individuals, and the group, needs to be taken into consideration. You will be asked to complete a questionnaire at the time of requesting a booking.
Apart from the horse back safaris, 4x4 vehicles are used for night drives and, when water levels permit, motorboat safaris are available. Birding walks, canoeing, and fishing are also offered.
IMPORTANT: Guests are required to bring their own riding helmets as they are not provided by the camp.
