Bratislava, Slovakia's capital and largest city, is a compact medieval city, situated where the Carpathian Mountains slope down to the Danube River. Its history dates back to 907 and includes a long spell as the capital of Hungary from 1563 to 1841. Many beautiful monuments survive in the Old Town including St Martin's Cathedral, the Primate's Palace with rare English Tapestries, and the Castle area, from where there are great views over the city. All in all Bratislava is a delightful city with as much charm but far fewer visitors than neighbouring Prague.
Standing high upon an isolated hill, Bratislava Castle overlooks the Danube and provides an excellent view of the city whilst being an amazing sight in its own right.
Post World War II, Slovakia established a communist regime and this can be seen in the architecture in Bratislava. Examples include the Slovak Radio building and Novy Most Bridge, previously called Most SNP, translated to mean ‘Bridge of the Slovak National Uprising’.
The medieval town centre of Bardejov is a Unesco world heritage site. Of note are, the Church of Saint Giles, first mentioned in 1247, and the town hall, constructed in 1505 with a Gothic base, but finished in a Renaissance style.
A grand castle, originally constructed in 1113, Bojnice Castle has tours available both at day and at night and also houses a museum.
The Carpathian Mountain range stretches through a number of countries in Eastern Europe and is home to numerous flora and fauna. A visit to one of the wineries in Slovakia offers the opportunity to try some fine wines and admire the magnificent views.
