On the train… to Machu Picchu

| November 11, 2016

I’d wanted to go to Machu Picchu for some while but the distance and unfamiliarity scared me off. I decided that, despite the cost, I’d go ‘Train to Machu Picchu’, an escorted tour to Peru and chose the longest-established tour operator, Cox & Kings. It was an active holiday and one which I spent each night going to bed saying ‘wow, that was an amazing day!’

Lake Titicaca

There were so many highlights it’s difficult to pick even a handful out. The Uros reed people of Lake Titicaca,

the soaring condors,

the vast expanse of the altiplano, the towering snow covered Andes,

the herds of llamas and vicunas,

Andean explorer

the Andean Explorer train, Volcano Misti,

the Inca Ice Maiden mummy, the vastly different cities, Ollantaytambo,

Machu Picchu

and of course, the reason for the visit, Machu Picchu itself.

Avianca can be commended as an airline with excellent service, flights on time and luggage following us throughout the 8 flights involved. The accommodation also lived up to expectation with spacious, comfortable rooms and buffet style breakfasts.

What made the whole tour even more special were the tour guides, their planning and attention to detail. Juan Carlos from Lima Tours met us at the airport and arranged everything from start to finish, keeping us informed about the next day and what we were to wear and take. Bottles of water were always readily available. We were shown the best places to be to see the sights. We were given insider information. We were taken to markets and tasted the unusual fruit.

A farmer’s blockade threatened to stop us getting to Machu Picchu; it was overcome with a rather early start but breakfast and rest time arranged in a hotel after the blockade. Most other people did not make it to Machu Picchu that day; the archaeological site was nearly empty.

The specialist knowledge tour guides – Jorge, Sol and Roy - who accompanied us on each section of the tour brought the history to life and provided so much detail to enhance our visits. All the entry and transport tickets were arranged for us, luggage stored or transported as required. Mini bus transport was always there on time to maximise the experience and we could leave anything very safely with the driver. It just left us to appreciate and enjoy the experience. Value for money? It far exceeded our expectations.
