The jewel of Jordan Petra

Cox & Kings client Rebecca Packer recently visited Jordan. Here is her account of her first-time trip to Jordan and why she was not disappointed.

Petra was on our bucket list for quite a while and we finally went as part of Cox & Kings' Splendours of Jordan 7-day tour in September 2012. What a sight and what a site! Petra was all we expected and more. From the long but picturesque walk through the rock Siq to the Treasury, to the royal tombs, the colonnaded street and the climb to the amazing monastery, we loved every minute. We had no idea that the site would be so extensive and even three visits (one in candlelight) did not give us time to see all the areas.

If we could go back again we would do some of the lovely trails around Petra that would be just too much for a one-day or even two-day visit. The amazing, natural, colours of the carved rocks will stay with me as a key part of Petra, along with the way the colours changed in different lights making each area complete eye candy. There are sellers of nick-nacks, cafes, camels and donkeys all about the area, and the Bedouins that staff these stalls are friendly, if persistent, which added to the sense of continued life at this age old site of Petra – an absolute jewel.
