The delights of Cuzco Palacio Nazarenas Hotel
After an extensive four year renovation project, at 1pm GMT on 15th June 2012 (8am local time) Orient-Express is opening the doors to their latest hotel in Peru.
Palacio Nazarenas, on the same Cuzco square as Orient-Express’ well-known Monasterio hotel, will be an all-suite boutique hotel, in a former 16th century convent. During the painstaking excavation process, which even involved using toothbrushes, architects and archaeologists uncovered a host of Incan treasures, (including an original Inca sandal) which are being showcased in the hotel’s library. All of the 55 rooms are oxygenated, to aid acclimatisation, and the hotel is the city’s first to have an outdoor infinity pool – perfect for relaxing by after a day’s sightseeing. Original Incan walls that were discovered in the renovations have been preserved under glass floors of the spa and now have water running over them to create a soothing atmosphere. Murals on the hotel walls are rare survivors from Cuzco’s colonial heyday and were carefully restored to bring them back to life. The largest mural is that of Senor de Huanca, which was painted on the wall of a cell following a vision of Christ experienced by a nun during the days when Palacio Nazarenas was a Carmelite convent. The hotel’s gourmet restaurant, Senzo, will be overseen by Peruvian chef Virgilio Martinez, who is also opening Lima, a new restaurant in London, this year. All the ingredients will be sourced from the hotel’s own vegetable garden or from around Cuzco, to support local farmers and producers.
Cox & Kings can include stays at Palacio Nazarenas as part of any tailor-made or private holiday to Peru.Share:
