Cox & Kings’ Roop Kumar recently travelled to Dubai and was impressed with the world’s tallest building.

Ever been to the Petronas Tower in Kuala Lumpur or the CN Tower in Toronto? Well, forget all of them because now you have something taller than ever! The Burj Khalifa is a modern day marvel of man's progress in architecture and Dubai's new icon showing off their dynamic and prosperous standing not only in the Middle East but also the world.

The Burj Khalifa or as some call it, the needle, is in downtown Dubai and proudly stands at  828 metres (2,716.5 feet) and has more than 160 stories. It holds the world record for being the tallest free standing structure in the world, being the world's highest outdoor observation deck and for having the longest elevator.

The architecture is based on a natural floral design and if viewed from the sky looks like a flower in full bloom.  The building is home to many corporate offices, residential apartments and the world's only Armani hotel. Who could ask for a better address than the world's tallest building?

First impressions of the building are a simple "wow"! This magnificent structure simply commands respect and the sheer magnitude is awe-inspiring. Many people may say that Dubai likes to compete with its brother Emirates in wanting to have the biggest, largest etc, but this is something that they should truly be proud of.

The elevator holds approximately 10 people per car and travels at an astounding 10 metres per second. They are pressurised and have dim lights with fantastic Arabian music to enrich your experience and soften the altitude sickness which hardly anyone ever gets. I can assure you it was a wonderful experience and before you know it you are already on the 124th floor.

"On the top", as the observation floor is called, there are beautiful 360 degree views of Dubai, including Sheikh Zayed Road, The Jumeirah Palm and The World Islands. There are free digital telescopes to use and they not only give you real time views, but at the touch of a button: the historic view.

Tip - If you are planning to visit the Burj Khalifa, please book well in advance as visits are timed and instant purchase is AED 400, compared to AED 100 for an advance ticket.
