Ferrari in the Desert Yas Island, Abu Dhabi
Roop Kumar, Cox & Kings’ Sales Development Manager, writes about his trip to Abu Dhabi.
The UAE's capital city Abu Dhabi is slowly but surely emerging as the new "place to be". Abu Dhabi used to be one of Dubai’s quieter cousins, but is now undergoing something of a transformation with the addition of several new iconic landmarks such as the world’s largest indoor theme park - Ferrari World on Yas Island.
I went the day after its Grand Opening, but have to admit I was actually slightly disappointed with the whole running of the place. They have yet to reach the professional standards of running a theme park like the Americans who seem to have just the right recipe for it, but it is still early days and there is lots of time to improve.
The entrance tickets may not be the cheapest (375 for the premium ticket), but if you’re an adrenalin junkie like me then " Formula Rosso - World's Fastest Roller Coaster!" is not to be missed. As you arrive you are greeted by the purring of Ferrari engines through strategically placed speakers around the reception area. I was disappointed to be told that 3 out of the 5 "thrill" rides were actually closed when I visited. However, the staff did seem apologetic and the ticket prices were slightly reduced to reflect this. The promise of Formula Rosso opening sometime that evening kept me going.
We did the dual tracked "Fiorano GT Challenge" with friends, which was fun but only accelerated to 95 Km/h. There were also state-of-the-art simulators, two of which are based on actual Scuderia drivers using the Yas island track.
Finally, we saw that people had started making their way to Formula Rosso. Each ride takes exactly 60 seconds from start to finish. The seats are the actual size of a Formula 1 car, which gives the ride a more authentic feel and I somehow managed to get on the second row.
I have been to the "scream machines" and the top 5 roller coasters of the world in California, but nothing could prepare me for this one! When they claim to be the world's fastest roller coaster, believe me they mean it! We were shot at an acceleration of 0 to 240 km/h in 4.9 seconds. Wow, what a feeling. Please always wear the goggles offered so that you can keep your eyes open, otherwise you'll be forced to shut your eyes and miss all the fun. I was pretty shaken afterwards and rattled my way out….
