An 80th birthday... in Russia
Cox & Kings’ client Fanar Collings chose a Russian holiday to celebrate her mother’s 80th birthday. Here is an overview of their experience.
The Kremlin, Moscow
I booked the Classic Russia holiday to Moscow and St Petersburg as an 80th birthday present for my mother. I had never been on an escorted tour but thought the itinery looked good, and the hotels of a good calibre. We had a fantastic time – the guides were excellent, with interesting information about the places we were taken. What was great was the itinerary was comprehensive, yet with plenty of free time if you wanted it, and optional tours offered if you did not feel comfortable discovering the cities on your own.
This worked perfectly as I explored Izmailovsky Market on my own while my mother had an optional tour of the Moscow Metro. She had told me it was interesting and easy to do with a guide accompanying her – though admittedly we then got lost trying to use the metro on our own the following day.

Our hotel in Moscow was the Marriot Grand Hotel, which was luxurious, as well as being central, close to Red Square and the Bolshoi Theatre.
Meanwhile, the train journey to St Petersburg was exciting, and the carriages pleasant in a nice old fashioned way. The tours in St Petersburg were great, and again there was plenty of free time to go to places that were not on the itinerary on your own.
The Sokos Palace Bridge hotel in St Petersburg was beautiful, with a great spa to relax after a good day touring, as well as a nice bar, restaurant and terrace.
I would highly recommend this trip.
