Botanical tour of Jordan The RHS Flower Show
For many people Jordan begins and ends with its most iconic site: the ancient Nabataen ‘lost city’ of Petra. Inspired by the story of Johann Burckhardt’s rediscovery of Petra 200 years ago, Cox & Kings has partnered with the Jordan Tourism Board to create the Discover Jordan garden at the Royal Horticultural Society’s Hampton Court Palace Flower Show.
Designed by Paul Hervey Brookes, the garden recreates a small slice of Jordan having been inspired by its natural hidden treasures, the colour and variety of the landscapes, and the warmth and hospitality of the locals who are fascinating storytellers and passionate ambassadors for their country.
Regarded as one of the new Seven Wonders of the World, Petra is without a doubt one of the most spectacular and unmissable sites in the country, yet there is so much more on offer. For nature lovers, Jordan’s wilderness is astonishing. The kingdom has almost double the number of plant species as Great Britain, and the desert in bloom is one of the richest experiences nature has to offer. The Discover Jordan garden design aims to showcase that unique diversity. As Jordan is a water-poor country, many of the plants used in the garden will be suitable for British gardeners this summer.
The people of Jordan are aware of their rich natural heritage and the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature (RSCN) safeguards Jordan’s environment. Jordan boasts a diverse flora (almost double that of the United Kingdom) with some 2,500 plant species, of which 100 are endemic to the region and 10 are from Jordan alone. The Discover Jordan garden aims to showcase just a glimpse of the country’s rich natural environment.
RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show runs from 3rd – 8th July.
