An interview with ... Dr Anne Anderson

| December 2, 2014

Art historian, archaeologist, lecturer, broadcaster, writer and research fellow at the University of Exeter, Dr Anne Anderson is leading a Royal Academy of Arts art tour with Cox & Kings to Copenhagen, open to anyone with a passion for the arts.

Dr-Anne-AndersonHere, Dr Anne Anderson tells of why Copenhagen has impressed her so, and what travellers can look forward to discovering on the Copenhagen: Danish Art & Design tour.

How and why did you become interested in Copenhagen?

My first trip to the city was on board Swan Hellenic Minerva II as a guest speaker. My remit was Scandinavian art and design; I was already a big fan of Arne Jacobson chairs and Georg Jensen jewellery.

What do you enjoy most about leading a specialist tour such as this?

Visiting the lesser-known or out-of-the-way museums and galleries. Being able to explain why certain painters have captured our imagination and become so famous: for example Vilhelm Hammershøi has achieved fame as Denmark’s Vermeer, while my personal favourite is PS Krøyer, who I liken to John Singer Sargent.

What do you most enjoy about visiting Copenhagen?

It’s a beautiful city, deserving its appellation ‘Paris of the North’. The canals may come as a surprise; perhaps reminding you of Amsterdam. The Rosenborg Palace, picture-postcard pretty, is one of my favourite visits. I love Danish open sandwiches!

What visit on the tour are you most looking forward to (and why)?

I am very keen on the Skagen group of painters. Peder Severin Krøyer’s Summer Evening on the Skagen Southern Beach (1893) is one of my favourite paintings, as it captures a long Nordic summer night. The Winter Garden at Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek is a wonderful setting for sculpture, ancient and modern.

If you could only recommend one book to read before departure, what would it be?

David Revere Mc Fadden (ed) Scandinavian Modern Design 1880-1980, New York: Copper-Hewitt Museum and Harry N. Abrams, 1983. But this may lead to a shopping spree for Jacobsen chairs and Jensen silver!

  1. Did Dr Anderson take a party to Thessaloniki for NADFAS about 10-15 years ago?

    • Compass Online says:

      Hi Audrey,

Unfortunately she did not! She says she did, however, take a NADFAS tour to Tallin in 2011.

      Kind regards,
