Things to do in Finland

The things to do in Finland can change dramatically depending in which season you are travelling. Visit in winter and you can expect the north to be blanketed in snow, over a hushed landscape that is truly beautiful. Lapland is the main region to visit, and is also the northern-most area of the country.

Seeing the northern lights is a highlight for many travellers, and one of the best places to go to is Saariselkä. Located high in the Arctic Circle, you can take a snow mobile in search of the phenomenon, or stay in the Kakslauttanen resort in a glass igloo, built especially for you to spot the northern lights from the comfort of your bed. Rovaniemi is the official home of Santa Claus where snow shoeing, dog sledding can be experienced, and Kemi plays host to the world’s largest snow castle, reconstructed each year.

Summertime brings endless sunshine, opportunities for archipelago and lake cruises, as well as a certain convivial atmosphere. Helsinki and the south come alive at this time, though can be visited year-round – wander through green parks, view impressive gothic and contemporary buildings, and browse local farmers markets.
