Majestic Kenya ... following royal footsteps
Kenya’s history is dotted with Arab, Portuguese, Islamic and British colonial periods. British rule started in 1895 and lasted until 1963 when Jomo Kenyatta became the first president of independent Kenya.
To celebrate the long-awaited release of The Crown Season One on Blu-ray and DVD, Cox & Kings has created In Royal Footsteps, a new tour of Kenya. This private tour visits locations linked to the British royal family. The Crown is available on Blu-ray™, DVD and Platinum Edition Blu-ray™ from 16th October 2017.
The British royal family has maintained close ties with Kenya and here are four locations where you can follow in their footsteps.
Treetops in Aberdare
On 5th February 1952, Princess Elizabeth stayed at Treetops in Aberdare National Park near Mount Kenya. She left as queen the following day after the news that King George VI had passed away. In 1983, the Queen returned to Kenya on her first official state visit and included a nostalgic return to Treetops.

The lodge has changed considerably since the Queen’s first visit and no longer offers the intimate experience she would have had. The comfortable rooms still allow guests to stay high up in the lodge overlooking the Treetops waterhole, where there’s even a buzzer to alert you to visiting wildlife during the night. Stay up late and watch elephants, buffaloes, zebras, leopards and other wildlife gather at the waterhole.
Mara Serena Safari Lodge, Masai Mara
In 1971, Prince Charles, joined by Princess Anne, visited the Masai Mara National Reserve where he pitched a tent on the site that is now the Mara Serena Safari Lodge.
Mara Serena Safari Lodge, Masai Mara
Situated on a hill overlooking a water hole, Mara Serena Safari Lodge is a good base for exploring the Masai Mara. The rooms at the lodge are built to resemble a cluster of domed, mud-coloured huts and each has its own balcony and views of the grassy plain below. Activities at the lodge include daily safari drives and cultural entertainment as well as the option for having breakfast by the hippo pool.
Lewa Safari Camp in Lewa Wildlife Conservancy
Princes William and Harry have visited the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy numerous times: William spent time at Lewa during his gap year and Harry has been involved in their rhino conservation efforts. Lewa is home to over 130 black and white rhinos and has developed into a thriving and globally recognised rhino conservation habitat since the 1970s.
Lewa Safari Camp, Lewa Wildlife Conservancy
Set in the heart of the privately owned conservancy is the beautiful Lewa Safari Camp. In addition to guided bush walks, day and night safari drives, birdwatching and a visit to a prehistoric archaeological site, it offers an impressive view of snow-capped Mount Kenya.

Rutundu log cabins
The most romantic royal visit to Kenya was for Prince William’s proposal to Kate Middleton in 2010. William borrowed a helicopter and flew to the rustic and remote Rutundu log cabins on the northern slopes of Mount Kenya, on the edge of Lake Rutundu. The breathtakingly beautiful wilderness was the perfect setting for the royal proposal.
Set off the beaten track, these simple but charming cabins are the perfect place to unwind and enjoy the great outdoors. Walk in the fresh mountain air and have a go at trout fishing on Lake Rutundu.
