Day 3: Las TerrazasIn the morning, drive to Las Terrazas in the western province of Pinar del Rio for a stay of 2 nights. Established as a sustainable environmental and development project, Las Terrazas provides an ideal introduction to Cuba’s countryside life and landscapes. Visit the local community and the partially restored 19th-century coffee estate. (B, L, D)
Day 4: ViñalesFull-day tour of the beautiful Viñales valley, its tobacco plantations and rounded limestone hills. Visit a cigar factory and take a boat ride through the Indian Cave. (B, L)
Day 5: Peninsula de Zapata • CienfuegosTravel to Cienfuegos via the Peninsula de Zapata. Take a boat trip through the mangroves and drive past Playa Girón, site of the 1961 invasion. Continue to the small city of Cienfuegos, with its distinct French influence, for an overnight stay. (B, L, D)
Day 6: Cienfuegos • TrinidadMorning tour of Cienfuegos, known as the ‘Pearl of the South’, and visit the Cienfuegos botanical gardens. Afternoon transfer to Trinidad for a 2-night stay in a casa particular in the heart of the old town. Dine this evening at a privately run paladar. (B, D)
Day 7: TrinidadMorning walking tour of the town, including the Romantic Museum or Cantero Museum and a visit to Casa de la Musica. Founded in 1514, Trinidad contains well-preserved colonial buildings with hardly a trace of 20th-century architecture. In the afternoon, drive to the Valley of the Sugar Mills, dotted with ruins of large former sugar plantations and visit the Manaca Iznaga watchtower, a reminder of Cuba’s slave trade and colonisation. Day 8: TrinidadDay at leisure in Trinidad or take optional excursions.
Day 9: CamagüeyThis morning drive to Camagüey (5-6 hours). Short tour of its winding streets built to deter pirate attacks, and stay overnight. (B)
Days 10-11: Holguin • Santiago de CubaFull-day journey to Santiago de Cuba for a 2-night stay, visiting Holguin and Castro’s birthplace at Biran en route. Explore the island’s first capital and birthplace of Afro-Cuban culture including the historical centre, El Morro fortress, and the Gran Piedra and the Sierra Maestra mountains. (B, L)
Day 12: Sancti SpíritusFull-day journey to Sancti Spíritus for an overnight stay visiting El Cobre church, Cuba’s most important shrine, and Bayamo en route. (B)
Day 13-14: Santa Clara • HavanaTake a short city tour and continue to historic Santa Clara for a visit and onto Havana for 2 nights at the Iberostar Parque Central. (B)

The Melia Santiago de Cuba is a modern hotel situated close to the city centre. Rooms are well-appointed with traditional furnishings and have garden or city views. The Melia San Carlos is located in the historic centre of Cienfuegos, less than a 5-minute walk from the main plaza. La Moka Hotel is a simple hotel set amid the forested hills of Las Terrazas. The Iberostar Parque Central is located within walking distance of all the main sights of Old Havana and is surrounded by numerous celebrated buildings, such as the Capitol, the Garcia Lorca theatre and the Museum of Modern Arts. The main building, decorated in colonial style, offers classic rooms and is connected through an internal passage to a more contemporary tower wing. A choice of Classic or Contemporary room can be requested, but the hotel is unable to confirm a specific room prior to your arrival. Each part features a lobby bar, rooftop swimming pool and a terrace with panoramic views. Dining options include Mediterranean and Italian restaurants and an elegant steak house.
Hostal El Rijo is a small hotel located in a restored, light-blue colonial mansion on Plaza Honorato del Castillo. The two-storey structure, decorated with old photos of Sancti Spiritus, houses 16 spacious rooms, some of which have balconies overlooking the square and the church tower. There is a lovely internal courtyard with fountain and a small restaurant, and the bar and lounge area open on to the plaza.
Dating back to 1939, the Gran Hotel is ideally situated on a pedestrianised street in the heart of Camaguey. Rooms feature tiled floors and dark wooden antique furnishings. The property has a colonial courtyard with tropical foliage and a restaurant serving international cuisine. Features: 72 rooms, restaurant, bar, cafe, courtyard, rooftop terrace, swimming pool. Room amenities: Air conditioning, safe, television.
Casas particulares are privately run bed and breakfast-style accommodation; the term covers a range of different properties, from old colonial buildings to rustic and modern local houses, and standards vary widely. Some of the casas particulares do not have names, and are simply referred to by the name of the owners, while others are called 'hostals', the Spanish word for a guesthouse, but all are considered to be casas particulares. The properties feature very simple rooms with en suite facilities, and continental breakfast is included. Cox & Kings works with a selection of casas however, due to the way in which the casa particular programme operates, specific casas cannot be confirmed in advance.
