Nestled between the Amerindian villages of Annai and Rupertee, Rock View Lodge offers two guest houses each with four self-contained comfortable rooms. The lodge is set in gardens and orchards that attract hundreds of hummingbirds. You can join the local villagers in a game of volleyball, football or cricket, or just relax by the only pool in the Rupununi. The restaurant menu includes Brazilian barbecue prepared on a wood-fire grill under 50-year-old mango trees. Other delicacies are chicken and duck with coconut milk or baked fish seasoned in herbs from the organic garden. The Annai airstrip is located just 500 metres from the lodge.
Karanambu Lodge offers simple accommodation in six mud brick cottages with thatched roofs, and is very much part of the bush experience. The beds are comfortable and covered with their own mosquito nets, and each room has a private bathroom and a veranda with a hammock. Meals are served around a communal dining table in the living room of the main ranch. The lodge is run by the McTurk family on the family's former cattle ranch and was opened to the public by the late Diane McTurk, a world-renowned expert on giant river otters. Features: 6 rooms, dining room, limited Wi-Fi. Room amenities: Private cold shower & lavatory, veranda, mosquito nets.
The Iwokrama River Lodge is a field station and wildlife research centre located in Kurupukari on the banks of the Essequibo river, on the north-eastern borders of the Iwokrama forest. Accommodation is in eight timber cabins with thatched roofs, fans and private bathroom facilities. Meals are served in the main dining hall. The lodge is the base for exploratory trips into the forest, where you can sling a hammock at one of the numerous satellite camps. Turtle Mountain offers a challenging hike rewarded by spectacular views across the canopy and river to the distant mountains.
Cara Lodge was built in the 1840s and originally consisted of two houses. It has a long history and was the home of the first Lord Mayor of Georgetown. Over the years it has hosted many dignitaries including Edward VII who stayed at the house in 1923 and planted the sapodilla tree in the front garden to mark the occasion. Other notable guests to have visited in recent years include former American president Jimmy Carter, Prince Charles, Prince Andrew and Mick Jagger. The lodge does not have the full services of a 5-star hotel but this is made up for by the unique atmosphere and character of the property and the congenial family atmosphere. The rooms are all individually styled and decorated in Caribbean flavours with local kufa furniture. The Bottle restaurant is known as the best in the capital. It is open for lunch and dinner daily except Sunday.
Atta Rainforest Lodge is a comfortable camp with eight rooms with private bathrooms within the Iwokrama Forest Reserve, just a short walk from the Iwokrama canopy walkway. Surrounded by pristine forest and built in collaboration with the local communities using natural local materials, the lodge features an open-sided main building housing the bar and sitting and dining areas.
