Masoandro Lodge is a small, charming eco-lodge on the west coast of Sainte Marie Island, about 35 km north-east of the airport. Its hillside setting affords excellent land-based whale watching between mid-July and September and its location near Ikalalao Forest makes it a good choice for people who want both to enjoy the beach and observe Madagascar's extraordinary wildlife. The 17 bungalows are built of wood, in traditional Malagasy style, and thatched with ravinala (the travellers palm, and a symbol of Madagascar). They are furnished with large beds, mosquito nets and ceiling fans. All provide en suite facilities and a private sea-facing terrace. The lodge has a restaurant and a bar and there is also an outdoor entertainment area where traditional Malagasy dances are performed. There is a swimming pool and a private, sheltered, sandy beach.
