The elegantly restored, 19th-century Hacienda de San Antonio was originally built by German planter Armando Vogel and his Mexican wife, Clotilde Quevedo de Vogel. Set within a working ranch, an organic farm and a coffee plantation, the hacienda is located in the beautiful verdant scenery of the state of Colima, some 30km north of the city of Colima and 2.5 hours' drive from Guadalajara.
Originally a one-storey building, the hacienda has been enlarged to two storeys. A large and winding volcanic-stone staircase separates the two floors and their 26 suites. Each suite has its own theme, with some designed around the tapestries of the region or its charreada (horsemen), while others incorporate pre-Columbian legends and Spanish discoveries. Each suite is shaped by high, vaulted ceilings, French doors and windows, fireplaces, spacious bathrooms and a terrace or balcony with views of the extensive estate or the Colima volcano.
